The new Chromium-based Edge uses your RAM more efficiently, but only on theWindows10 May 2020 Update,saysMicrosoft.
Apparently, the latest version ofWindows10 to enter general availability offers segment heap memory enhancements. In turn, Win32 apps leverage it to use system RAM more efficiently.
According to an internal test by Microsoft, Edge uses 27% less memory onWindows10 version 2004 devices.
With theWindows10 May 2020 Update, Microsoft Edge has leveraged theWindowssegment heap memory improvements now available for Win32 applications to manage memory more efficiently. Early internal testing results of devices on the May 2020 Update are showing a memory usage reduction of up to 27% when browsing with Microsoft Edge.
Edge’s better memory management should let you accomplish more when browsing the internet. For example, you should be able to open more tabs with richer content than possible on other versions ofWindows.
Apart from that, the memory usage reduction when browsing with Edge should also free your RAM for other applications running on your PC.
It’s not yet clear whether or notChromebehaves the same way onWindows10 2004. The browser is Chromium-based, just like Microsoft Edge. But it doesn’t have a very good reputation when it comes to efficient RAM usage.
Edge has been getting tons of built-in improvements lately, from an integrated spellchecker to the new surfing-themed game. It has to be efficient in RAM usage to continue delivering a superior user experience.
