As you may remember, Windows Server 2008 already reached its end of support. That means Microsoft no longer delivers free feature improvements orsecurity updatesfor devices running on the operating system.

However, premium extended support for the OS is still available. Therefore, according to Microsoft, only ESU-supported devices can successfully install KB4561645.

In other words, you have to be running an OS edition that’s eligible for ESU. If you try installing on a non-supported PC, you’ll get an error after restarting your machine.

After installing thisupdateand restarting your device, you might receive the error, “Failure to configure Windows updates. Reverting Changes. Do not turn off your computer”, and theupdatemight show as Failed in Update History.

If you’re encountering that issue, confirm that you’re running a supported OS. If you are, make sure your add-on key is installed and working on your PC.

The above issues may not be the only thing preventing you from securing your machine with KB4561645, though.

Therefore, verify that you installed the necessary updates for Windows Server 2008 ESUs to install smoothly without any issues.

For example, do you have servicing stack updateKB4493730installed? Microsoft shipped the SSU back in 2019.

Similarly, be sure you have the ESU Licensing Preparation Package orKB4538484, which rolled out on February 11, 2020.

Windows 7users without ESU support are also unable to install the latestsecurity updateavailable for the OS thisPatch Tuesday.
